Truly romantic sentiments sometimes seem to be few and far between these days. Gone are the days of epic poems and heartfelt sonnets about the intensity of love and the power of connection. Or simple but true weddings. We love it when people try new things like change up cuisines, a new hairstyle, different shade of lipstick or nail polish, different Holiday escape you name it. With weddings especially the time-honoured traditional celebrations, there are great things that are pretty much set in stone but when it comes to the ‘white wedding’, a lot of some self-imposed traditions are tweaked. We must say even before this lockdown many have been scaling back from the usual 600 – 1000 guests down to about 200 people. We wonder if this will become the new standard and even get down to maybe 50 or 100 people. After all, in the African setting, we are known for huge joyous celebrations with not just family but the entire village. However, modern equivalents to these proclamations can be found in a variety of mediums: lyrics to contemporary tunes, long and thought-out text messages, even certain phrases in the form of graffiti can convey beautiful ideas about your wedding.

We find that these days the bride and groom are relieved that they have alternatives now to either go big or be more intimate for their or white weddings. Now that the smaller intimate weddings aren’t frowned upon and they aren’t a reflection of your bank account, it’s just a preference, more and more ‘traditions’ are thrown out the window. Especially with media acting as a point of inspiration for many facets of our life experience: many people choose to travel to a certain destination, attend a particular school, or enter into a specific career after first learning about these options through media. Additionally, we at Hems of Gold have seen countless nuptials with different – inspired details sprinkled throughout. Many couples bond over the little details they enjoy together, so it’s no surprise that these intimate details end up playing a part in their big day. Over the weekend we had an interesting conversation with Moses a friend of ours and a chef, who told us about a wedding that he catered recently and they had a BBQ theme. Of course, we went into overdrive thinking about stuff we could pull off that are idyllic for cocktail napkins, framed elements, ceremony programs, and many more elements of your wedding like ambience, the menu, the music etc. So he put together a BBQ menu that could be served at a BBQ wedding…

Appetizers

1) Chicken lollipops (lollipops deep fried and dipped in a honey glaze)

2) salsa and tortilla chips

Main course

1) Smoked chicken (chicken drumsticks smoked with a mustard sauce glaze)

2) vegetable skewers (cherry tomatoes, baby marrow, carrots and bell peppers grilled over a low flame)

3) Butter n garlic fish fillet( fillet smothered in butter and garlic, foiled and put on a low open flame).

Salad bar

1) Garden green salad (mixed greens, leaf lettuce with carrots, cucumber, celery, peppers and halloumi cheese)

2) Fruit salad (assorted fruits).

Then we started to envision what the bride would wear. Something light and easy that didn’t need to be kicked out of the way every 2 steps. With little sparkles all over the bodice to catch the light from the lanterns or fairy lights under the starry night. The groom would have a nice suit, no tie or just a vest with a tie and no jacket. Casual look you know. The guests too would get into the casual but smart dress code seated on family-style long tables chatting away.

The DJ can easily take special requests that trigger hilarious memories as everyone screams out the lyrics and dances the night away. The bride and groom cut their beautiful 5 tiered cake, serve all their guests then run off to the rest of their lives under an arch of sparklers.
