The vows made before God, with family and friends as your witnesses, is my favourite part about weddings. If the couple isn’t too shy, they will look deeply into each others eyes, promising forever. Some even shed a few tears of pure joy. I’ve also seen some that have a distant or distracted look probably thinking about the reception and wondering if everything is spot on . I also wonder sometimes if those that are so lost in each others eyes are paying attention to what the officiant is asking them to repeat after him/her. Are they weighing the significance of those words?
Down the road I’ve heard many couples that are going through a rough patch bring up the 2nd half of the vows. We know the words, say them with me:
For better or worse
For richer or poorer
In sickness and in health
Till death do us part.
The truth is, personally this bit is starting to bother me. I don’t like to make declarations of potential sickness, poverty or death( I now enjoy those that say for richer and richer, who declare only health and aren’t thinking about death whatsoever) It really should be from glory to glory, don’t you agree?
So where was I….oh yes, this 2nd half has two sides to it. The couple could use it to derive a sense of security that if things go awry your partner will stand by you through it all. On the flip side the same words can be used to manipulate or threaten when squabbles come up. “You will not leave this house unless you want die!!!. We said till death do us part and that’s how it will eventually be. Your death or mine but since it’s you that wants to leave it’ll most likely be your death. Choose wisely. Yikes!!! Is there a wiser choice than life?
Now more than ever I would love to see couples write their own vows. Right from their spirit. I know that most people would be skeptical because let’s face it, we would want a semblance of protection from unforeseen sticky situations. That sounds more like a contract. “Remember we said this and this so I’m holding you to it. And it was before God, He’s watching you.” Hostage situation, the blood of Jesus is the ransom hahaha just kidding. Ok I’m done with the silly jokes.
When we truly know that this is the one that God has desired for you, and we profess to be Christians, which means we have the Spirit of God in us, which then means that God’s love is in us, then surely the vows that will spring forth to this wonderful person standing before you will be powerful, beautiful, everlasting and true. Dare I add most likely more than the universally rehearsed words….
We’ll break down the 1st half of the traditional vows, that I actually love, in a couple of days.
Remember to let the splendor of God within you be revealed.
